Landmarks / History
Fifth Avenue has a history as a stylish and upscale thoroughfare dating
back to the mid 1800s, when the socialite Caroline Schermerhorn Astor
settled at the corner of 5th Avenue and 34th St. In 1893, her home became
the site of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, signaling Fifth Ave’s transition
to a high end commercial area. After 1900, the bulk of New York’s
ultra-wealthy moved to the stretch of Fifth Avenue between 59th Street
and 96th Street, settling into townhouses and luxury apartments. The
area between 34th Street and 59th Street became the home to numerous
grand department stores, many of which still operate today.
Notable landmarks on 5th Avenue include the Empire State Building, the New York Public Library, Lord and Taylor’s and Rockefeller Center. Famous stores located on its retail section include Gucci, Armani Exchange, Louis Vuitton and much more. Along “museum mile,” you’ll find the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim among many other great cultural institutions.

including the many residents of 5th Avenue’s much-desired luxury
apartments. All together, 5th Avenue offers a practically limitless
array of seminal New York experiences, from the Empire State Building
